David & Felicity

David and Felicity with Wicksteed and Shanks

Following on from previous successful productions, we once again wowed our audiences with our latest one, which we staged in December 2008 to an enthusiastic reception on both nights.

Alan Bennett concocted this play, a satirical perusal of the sexually liberated 1960s, as a facile, swift-moving “farce without doors”.

As with most farces, the storyline focuses on the sexual aspirations and frustrations of a small group of people, in this case the Wicksteed family:  randy general practitioner Arthur;  his frustrated, always hot-to-trot wife Muriel:  their hypochondriacal, socially underdeveloped son Dennis;  and

Wicksteed and Mrs Wicksteed

his flat-chested but sex-starved sister Constance.

Moving in and about the Wicksteed action are sexually deranged vicar Canon Throbbing;  much put-upon prosthetic salesman, Mr Shanks;  height-challenged but ever-pompous Sir Percy Shorter;  the haughty Lady Rumpers;  her nubile teenage daughter Felicity;  and the always suicidal Mr Purdue;   and serving as a caustic narrator and facilitator to all the shenanigans is the Wicksteed maid, Mrs Swabb.

Amongst the many plaudits from our audience, we received the following:

•    Fromus Players gets better and better with each production.
•    This was an evening of pure joy – excellent, thank you.
•    In spite of the weather, we came along because friends told us not to miss the show – and we’re very glad we came.
